    Background: WALES, PONTRHYDFEN

The widow of actor Richard Burton attended a memorial service on August 11 in the small mining village of Pontrhydfen in Wales. More than a thousand people from the village gathered outside the church and a further 450 were inside to hear the service, which was partly in Welsh. Burton's daughter, Kate, read the same poem as at the burial service at Burton's home in Celigny in Switzerland. Dylan Thomas's poem to his father. Actress Elizabeth Taylor decided against attending the service as she felt it would draw too much attention, but it's been reported that she will shortly pay a visit tot he village, where Burton frequently returned throughout his life. Burton's brother, Graham Jenkinson, said he was sure Burton would have appreciated the service, and the Welsh villagers, renowned for their singing made their feelings felt in song.
