Background: The Pakistan Government has built experimental automatic bread-making factories at Lahore and Karachi. It hopes the new plants will modernise a home based industry in the country that is at least 3000 years old.
The new factories produce up to 6000 Rotis (Tandoori bread) an hour. The Government says the automatic machines improve the quality of baking, avoid wastage and eliminate the drudgery of conventional methods of baking.
Bread has been backed traditionally by the Pakistani women in their home ovens. There is some opposition in the country towards factory made bread. Baking good bread is an art, which cannot be imitated by machines, say the critics.
The automatic plants were designed and built by a West German firm, in collaboration with Pakistani consultants.
After baking, the bread should remain fresh for 12 hours. It is sold in polythene packs of five.
By the end of the year the Government plans to have built another three plants each at Lahore and Karachi.
