Background: King Hussein of Jordan had talks in Bonn on Wednesday (16 December) with Chancellor Herr Brandt at the start of a four-day unofficial visit to West Germany. They discussed the Middle East situation and questions of mutual interest.

The King arrived by air from Paris amid strict security precautions, and reviewed a Guard of Honour before going on to the Chancellery in the capital for his meeting with Herr Brandt.

A Government spokesman said King Hussein and Herr Brandt both expressed the hope that a solutions to the Middle East dispute would be found that was satisfactory to both parties. They agreed that a solution would be based on the United Nations Security Council Resolution of November 1967.

Bilateral questions covered mainly economic co-operation between West Germany and Jordan.

King Hussein was accompanied at the talks by his Foreign Minister Abdullah Salah, and State Secretary Paul Frank of the Bonn Foreign Ministry was also present.

King Hussein was to have talks with Foreign Minister Walter Scheel later, and discussions with representatives of the German Foreign Affairs Society.

Jordan re-established diplomatic relations with West Germany in 1957, two year after severing ties in protest against Bonn's recognition of Israel.
