Background: Mr Edward Gierek, First Secretary of the Polish Communist Party, was welcomed officially at the Elysee Palace in Paris on Monday (2 October) by President Pompidou at the start of his five-day visit to France. It was the first visit of a Polish official to the country since the end of world War Two.

During three sessions of private talks with M. Pompidou, Mr Gierek will discuss European security, nuclear disarmament, East-West relations and bilateral trade.

Mr Gierek, who is 49, succeeded Wladyslaw Gomulka as head of the Polish Communist Party in 1970 after workers in Baltic cities rioted over economic issues. From 1931 to 1934 he worked in a northern French coal mine until expelled from the country after a long strike by Polish coalworkers.
