Background: Soviet competitors have proved once again their depth in the art of fencing. In the World Championships in Melbourne, Australia, they had taken three titles by Sunday (26 August) -- the men's foil team championships by defeating Italy nine-six, the Women's Foil Team. Championship, defeating Hungary nine-four, and the Men's Sabre Team Championship, with another victory over Italy, this time by a score of nine-one.
SYNOPSIS: The ten day championships held in the Monash University in Melbourne, Australia began on August 18th. The bouts in the men's sabre team competitions proved almost too much for Soviet ex-titleholder Vladimir Nazlymov. His defeat by Franco Dalla Barba of Italy whose scintillating touch eclipsed his rival by a score of five-two, shocked the Soviets.
In the match the Soviets queried the referee's decision to give the point to Dalla Barba.

Nazlymov had to struggle again against Michele Maffei of Italy, but was finally able to beat him five-four, after a hard fought contest.

In another match, Sidiak of the Soviet Union had little difficulty in defeating Michele Maffei, five-one. This gave the Soviets a crushing nine-one victory over Italy.
