Background: Panathinaikos, the Athens club, were put out of the EUFA Cup last night (October 3). They beat Grasshoppers of Zurich 2-1 but went out 3-2 on aggregate scores.

Last night's game in Athens was charged with emotion. The game was held up for a time in the first half when the crowd began rioting and throwing rubbish onto the pitch and in the second half one of the Panathinaikos players was sent off.

Grasshoppers came to Athens with a 2-0 lead from the first leg played in Zurich and went further ahead in the first half of the match with a breakaway goal scored by Elsener. It was in face of this deficit that the crowd began to demonstrate until police intervened.

But in the second half, Panathinaikos made a strong bid to save the game. Twice they came near to scoring before striker Antoniades put thee ball in the net with a fine shot. the game became heated after this and one of the Panathinaikos players was sent off y Rumanian referee Limuna.

But the Greek club pressed strongly and scored again in the closing minutes, this time from a corner, when Antoniades was again the scorer.

SYNOPSIS: Now leading 3-0 on aggregate, the Swiss players show their delight...but soon, the Greek crowd demonstrated how they felt.... and they stopped the game until police intervened.

Half-time, and when the game kicked off for the second half, Panathinaikos twice went near to scoring....but the Swiss scrambled the ball away from their goal on both occasions.

But the Greeks continued to press hard and in this attack, they take the ball out of their half of the field and switch the attack upfield, where striker Antoniades scores to make the score 3-1 on aggregate.

But play became scrappy at this stage and Rumanian referee Limuna shows the red card to a Greek player, who is ordered off.

Panathinaikos scored again at the end of the game, ut it was not enough.
