Background: SOUTH AFRICAN CLIFF DRYSDALE AND BRITAIN'S RODGER TAYLOR BEAT THE SOUTH AMERICAN PAIR, PANCHO SEGURA AND ALEX OLMEDO, IN STRAIGHT SETS IN THE WIMBLEDON MEN'S DOUBLES QUARTER-FINALS TODAY (TUESDAY). DRYSDALE AND TAYLOR, MEMBERS OF THE "HANDSOME EIGHT" PROFESSIONAL GROUP, WON 6-4, 7-5, 7-5.

ALTHOUGH THEY WERE WELL BEATEN, THE SOUTH AMERICANS GAVE A THOROUGHLY ENTERTAINING DISPLAY. SEGURA AT 47 IS ONE OF THE MOST COLOURFUL PLAYERS IN TENNIS. HE WAS LAST AT WIMBLEDON TWENTY YEARS AGO BEFORE HE JOINED JACK KRAMER'S "TRAVELLING CIRCUS." HE WAS FAMOUS FOR HIS TWO-HANDED BACK-HAND, BUT TODAY THE PAUNCHY, BOW-LEGGED LITTLE ECUADORIAN WON OVER THE CROWD WITH HIS GESTICULATIONS AND VOLUBLE COMMENTS IN SPANISH. HIS PERUVIAN PARTNER, ALEX OLMEDO, WAS THE MEN'S SINGLES CHAMPION AT WIMBLEDON IN 1959. IN THE PREVIOUS ROUND, OLMEDO AND SEGURA CRATED WIMBLEDON HISTORY WHEN THEY WON THE LONGEST EVER SET EVER PLAYED THERE. THEY DID THIS WHILE BEATING THE SOUTH AFRICAN PAIR, ABE SEGAL AND GORDON FORBES, 32-30, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.
