Background: KING HUSSEIN OF JORDAN IS IN CAIRO ON A THREE-DAY PRIVATE VISIT. HE ARRIVED THERE YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) BY AIR FROM AMMAN, AND WAS WELCOMED BY PRESIDENT NASSER.

NUMEROUS UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC DIGNITARIES WERE ALSO AT THE AIRPORT, AS WELL AS A GUARD-OF-HONOUR. HIS VISIT COMES ALMOST TWO MONTHS AFTER THE U.S.R. AND JORDAN RESUMED DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS.

THEY SEVERED TIES IN OCTOBER, 1961, WHEN JORDAN RECOGNISED THE NEW SYRIAN REGIME WHICH TOOK SYRIA OUT OF THE U.A.R. IT SIGNALLED THE START OF A RADIO CAMPAIGN BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES, WITH JORDAN ALLEGING THAT PRESIDENT NASSER HAD PLOTTED TO KILL THE YOUNG KING.

RECENT REPORTS HAVE SAID THAT KING HUSSEIN INTENDS TO MAKE SEVERAL TRIPS TO CAIRO IN THE COMING MONTHS TO CO-ORDINATE WITH PRESIDENT NASSER ON GENERAL ARAB AFFAIRS.
