NOTE TO EDITORS: WE WOULD LIKE TO CORRECT THE IMPRESSION THAT MAY HAVE BEEN GIVEN IN THE SCRIPT FOR PRODUCTION NUMBER 10949/75 "ALGERIA: MAURITANIAN AND ALGERIAN LEADERS MEET TO DISCUSS SPANISH SAHARA CRISIS" SERVICED ON 12 NOVEMBER, 1975. IN THE FIRST PARAGRAPH OF THE FRONT PAGE IT WAS NOT MEANT TO IMPLY THAT ALGERIA LAYS ANY CLAIM TO THE SPANISH SAHARA. IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN CLEARLY STATED THAT ALGERIA SUPPORTS COMPLETE INDEPENDENCE FOR THE TERRITORY.

Background: The President of Mauritania, Mokhtar Ould Daddah, and the President of Algeria, Houari Boumedienne, met in the western Algerian town of Bechar on Monday (10 November) to discuss the current Spanish Sahara crisis. Along with Spain and Morocco, Mauritania and Algeria are laying claim to a stake in the phosphate rich country.

Last week thousands of Moroccans led by their King, Hassan, were stopped without bloodshed by Spanish troops on their march into Spanish Sahara to 'Unite' the country with Morocco. This week representative of Spain, Morocco and Mauritania are meeting in Madrid to try to bring about a peaceful solution to the crisis.

Algeria is not taking part in the current talks and Morocco claims that the situation has nothing to do with Algeria and the region should be annexed by Morocco and Mauritania. However Algeria has a different view and is not expected to accept meekly any agreement made between the other countries at the Madrid talks.

Monday's meeting between President Ould Daddah and President Boumedienne was seen as attempt by the two countries to establish a framework on which to build a just solution to the Spanish Sahara problem. It is understood that the two men a discussed bilateral relations, the disputed region and other matters concerning Africa and the Arab world at the meeting.

Speaking to newsmen at Bechar President Boumedienne said that it was imperative that consultations be held to find the true solution to a problem that not only concerns Morocco, Algeria and Mauritania, but their neighbouring countries and friends.

SYNOPSIS: On Monday the President of Mauritania, Mokhtar Ould Daddah, flew into the west Algerian town of Bechar to discuss the current Spanish Sahara crisis with Algeria's President Houari Boumedienne.

President Boumedienne was at the airport to meet President Ould Daddah. Because of Morocco's insistence that the annex of the phosphate rich region has nothing to do with Algeria relations between Mauritania and Algeria have been somewhat strained recently. Morocco feels the Spanish Sahara should be split between itself and Mauritania.

Monday's meeting was seen as an attempt to overcome any differences between Algeria and Mauritania and to set up a framework on which to build a just solution to the Spanish Sahara problem.

Speaking to newsmen at the airport President Boumedienne said that it was important that consultations be held to find a true solution to the problem as it not only concerned Morocco, Algeria and Mauritania their neighbours and friends as well.

The two leaders later adjourned to the Prefecture in Bechar where it's understood they talked about bilateral relations, the disputed region and other matters concerning Africa and the Arab world.

This week talks are also being held between Spain, Morocco and Mauritania in Madrid to try to work out a solution.
