GENERAL DAYAN: "And the information we have is that they were responsible for the last assassination in Athens, and the Arab girl - women -- that was killed in the hijacked Japanese plane was also one of their members. And on the whole we think this is a most extreme, murderous organisation, and the Doctor Habash heading this organisation is responsible for a number of assassinations that took place in the past. As far as we know they plan to go on with it, and we think it is our duty to do whatever we can to stop it, to prevent it. And the interception of the Lebanese airliner yesterday was one part of this operation of ours. For sure it is against the normal law, and it shouldn't be done during normal life-time, and in normal way of life. But what we did yesterday -- and we did it not do it with much pleasure -- was we thought, and I still think so, the better alternative, the better choice out of the two...not to fight them at all."

Background: Israeli Defence Minister Moshe Dayan, speaking at a press conference in Tel Aviv on Saturday (August II), defended his government's action in forcing down an Arab airliner the previous day.
General Dayan had earlier spoken to the nation on television, saying that the Israeli fighters had intercepter the airliner and made it land at an Israeli airbase under his personal orders. He also admitted the objective of the mission had not been achieved.
At his press conference, General Dayan described Palestine Liberation Organisation leader Dr. George Habash as 'a chief murderer', at the head of 'a most extreme, murderous organisation'.
Blaming the PLO for the recent Athens airport shootings and the hijacking of the Japanese jumbo jetliner, General Dayan said Israel would continue to strike at guerrillas wherever and whenever possible, but would never authorise action endangering civilians.
The following is an extract from the conference with General Dayan speaking in English. Our film also includes brief excerpts of his television address to the Israeli people in Hebrew.
