COMMENTATOR: "These American helicopters fly troops, drugs, bullets and information to the Laos front. They fly out refugees, local big shots, the wounded, and some dead. Sometimes in this heat, the long dead. It is a job with little glamour and less pay than you'd guess, but the American civilian pilots know the Lao people and their war perhaps better and closer than other Americans here. These three have just flown eighteen continuous hours.

1st Pilot:- "I think Laos is the only country in the world where there is no American image. It's war.. out here it's war. You can call it a brush fire war, global war, you can call it anything you want. Like he said it's just as dirty and filthy as any other war that's been fought. However, there is something new, there is something different. It's a war, a nation fighting itself. Lao fighting Lao. And the question is why is Lao fighting Lao. Like you said before, what reason have the Pathet Lao to fight their brothers of their kinsmen. It's something that the Communists have come up with, and have perfected, and they are pushing it out here. It's more or less a testing ground for them to see whether they can force the country to fight against itself, and as far as I am concerned they have proved their point. A country will fight against itself, a people will fight against their own people. It's something we have missed. Something we have overlooked is the fact why they will fight themselves. I think that was our big mistake in Laos. We considered these people Communists. We considered them enemies. We considered them something that should be fought against, but we don't consider why, and I think that's where we have missed out."

2nd Pilot:- "It's mad. If you can get the Lao to fight among themselves, the most peace-loving, anti-militaristic people in the world today, then you can get anyone to engage in a civil war, anyone.

    3rd Pilot:- "That's why it's so vicious".
