Background: Over 70 women of South Africa's Black Sash organization met in Pretoria on Union Day, May 31, for a public reaffirmation of their anti-apartheid beliefs.

Elsewhere in South Africa official celebrations of the Union's 50th anniversary were being staged. In contrast, the women assembled at Pretoria's Union Buildings amphitheatre, and after an address from one of their leaders and repeating together their vows, stood solemnly in silence for half an hour. The few spectators were mostly police or security men.

Black Sash President Mrs. Jean Sinclair called on the National Party to make its leaders change their apartheid policy. Another big Union Day protest against present Government policy was held in Cape Town.
