Background: The Ministerial Council of the European Free Trade Association, meeting from Feb 14 to Feb 16 in Geneva, Switzerland, decided to accelerate tariff reduction in their seven countries. This decision brought the Seven into line with the European Common Market countries (the Six) from July 1, this year, instead of January 1, next year, as originally planned.

The decision, reducing tariffs by a total of 30 percent, was made at the opening session, with UK Board of Trade President Reginald Maudling in the chair. At the second session, the Council agreed on a formula for the association of Finland with the Seven.
