Background: More than twenty personnel carriers loaded with sacks of tinned food and rice left Malacanang Park in the Palace grounds on Monday (Dec 19) destined for distribution among the thousands of poor people in the Metro Manila area.
After the playing of the national anthem, the president and his wife took a pair of golden scissors, to cut a green and red ribbon, giving the gift laden trucks their signal to be on their way.
Each truck was sent on its way with an individual Santa, after being waved off by the president and his wife Imelda, the Governor of Metro Manila.
During the ceremony a distraught mother struggled with security officials and broke free to present the President with a petition pleading for mercy for her son, a soldier who's been accused of murder. The president told newsmen afterwards that he has ordered an immediate investigation of the ease and he added that if the evidence against the mother's son was flimsy than the best Christmas present for her would be his immediate release.
Marcos also told newsmen that he was pleased with the referendum results and would shortly going ahead with plans to for elections next year for the new interim assembly.....which will pave the way for what Marcos described as modified Parliamentary democracy.
