ECEVIT:"Switzerland has usually brought luck to international meetings and I hope that we shall benefit from this tradition in my meeting with Mr Karamanlis. Although Turkey and Greece are neighbours, for some years there has been a disruption in the relations between the two allied countries. I think this is largely due to transitional reasons and psychological reasons. I hope that, by establishing a permanent dialogue at a high political level, we may re-establish an atmosphere of mutual confidence between the two neighbouring nations and agree upon the best approaches to seek solutions to our problems. We do not intend, we do not claim that we shall be able to tackle and solve all the problem between Turkey and Greece within two days, but I think we shall try to establish a fruitful and permanent dialogue and try to agree upon the best approaches to tackle the problems that concern Turkey. I personally shall be ready to discuss any matters that Mr Karamanlis may wish to discuss."
The present round of talks were arranged on the suggestion of Mr Ecevit soon after he became Prime Minister in January. He said a face-to-face meeting with Mr Karamanlis could cut through the suspicion and stagnation which had hampered relations between the two countries for many years.
