Background: The United States is lending Australia twenty-four Phantom jet bombers to strengthen its air defences. The first five landed at the Royal Australian Air Force base at Amberley, near Brisbane, on Tuesday (September 15).

The Phantoms are on lease pending a fitness rating for the trouble-plagued F-111,the swing-wing fighter-bomber which the Australians want to buy from the United States. Deliveries of the new aircraft are not now expected before next year.

American crews ferried the Phantoms to Australia. The hand-over of the aircraft will be completed on October 23. As they taxied in, the ferry pilots were welcomed by Australian Defence Minister Malcolm Fraser.

Australian air chiefs feel that the only problem with the Phantom jets is that their range is short -- unless supported by air-refuelling tankers. So far the Australians have declined to order tankers for this purpose pending final delivery tests of the F-111.
