Background: Pope Paul, in a New Year message, has once again called for a intensive effort to achieve peace in the world. Celebrating mass at the church of San Antonio, south of Rome, the Pope said in an improvised speech that it was the duty of every individual to work for peace.
He went on to condemn the use of violence as a political expedient, referring to "pseudo-justice" and the use of the vendetta, and protested that too many factions were adopting "this tragic ... psychology of the Mafia, which believes it can settle accounts by killing people and oppressing the enemy". It was reportedly the first time the Pope had referred to the Mafia.
During the speech, he also expressed his anxiety at the increase in world armaments and nuclear weapons. The world, he said, had apparently achieved a kind of balance -- "But it is a balance based on force and one fear against another. A continuous distrust fills the atmosphere of our lives ... That is why we must realise the sense of urgency of peace."
