And in the 1500 - metres free style, another world record by Murray Rose of Australia in 17 minutes, 46.5 seconds. Yamanaka was second.
About 12,000 fans watched the races by Japanese and American swimmers during their three-day contest. It was their fifth meeting aimed at fostering friendly relations between both countries. The Australian Murray Rose was a guest of the 17-strong U.S. team.
