Background: THE BOSTON YACHT CLUB'S 12-METRE SLOOP "NEFERTITI" - EXPECTED TO DEFEND THE AMERICA'S CUP AGAINST AUSTRALIA'S "GRETEL" NEXT SEPTEMBER - WENT UNDER SAIL FOR THE FIRST TIME MAY 28 OFF MARBLEHEAD, MASSACHUSETTS.

"NEFERTITI", WHO MUST BEAT THREE OTHER AMERICAN CONTENDERS BEFORE MEETING "GRETEL", CARRIED A BIG GENOA JIB BUILT FOR HEAVY. WEATHER, AND A PERFECTLY FITTING MAINSAIL. LATER, SHE USED TWO SAILS BELONGING TO OTHER CRAFT - A SMALL GENOA THAT EMPHASIZED THE SIZE OF HER REGULAR OVERLAPPING JIB, AND A RED, WHITE AND BLUE SPINNAKER, BORROWED FROM A SCHOONER BELONGING TO THE BOSTON YACHT CLUB COMMODORE.

SHE PUT UP A GOOD PERFORMANCE ON HER INITIAL TEST, AND HER DESIGNER AND CO-SKIPPER FRED HOOD, SAID HE WAS WELL PLEASED. WITH A FIVE TO EIGHT KNOT SOUTH-EAST BREEZE BLOWING, SHE DISPLAYED AN ABILITY TO PICK UP SPEED RAPIDLY AND MAINTAIN A HIGH SPEED.

"GRETEL" AND "VIM", HER TRIAL HORSE, WILL LEAVE SYDNEY MAY 31 ON A CARGO SHIP FOR THEIR TRIALS IN THE UNITED STATES.
