CARTER: My name is Jimmy Carter and I'm running for President.....Our country has lived through a time of torment. Its now time for healing. We want to have faith again. We want to be proud again. We just want the truth again. Its time for the people to run the government - and not the other way round".

Mr. Carter will have to wait until the Republican party Convention in Kansas City next month, to learn who his opponent will be. Presidential Ford is just leading the former Californian Governor Mr. Ronald Reagan in the race for delegate votes. But the margin is very narrow. And its by no means certain whether President Ford will win his party's presidential nomination.

Background: Mr. Jimmy Carter, the former Governor of the southern state of Georgia, accepted the Democratic Party Presidential nomination at his party's convention in New York City on Thursday (15 July).

SYNOPSIS: The convention centre in Madison Square Carden was packed to hear Mr. Carter give his acceptance speech. The three thousand delegates were wild with excitement as he made his first appearance at the convention.

It was an emotional entrance. Waiting to greet him were his mother, Lillian, ten-year old daughter, Amy, wife Rosalynn and sister, Rachel. Democratic officials say the party has not been as united for many years. The theme of unity was the keynote of the convention. All the leading democrats from Governor George Wallace of Alabama to Senator Hubert Humprhey - have now lined up behind Mr. Carter. It was also the theme of Mr. Carter's acceptance speech.

Mr. Carter's choice of the Vice Presidential candidate has delighted liberal Democrats. He's chosen Senator Walter Mondale from Minnesota. The Senator received an overwhelming vote of approval from the convention.

At the close of the convention Senator Mondale and Mr. Carter appeared with their wives on the rostrum. The first opinion polls taken since their nomination give the democrats a 20 lead over their Republican opponents for the Presidential election.
