Background: At least eight people were killed today (Monday) when tornadoes swept across Central Holland and Northern Flanders in Belgium.
A further six people died when a tornado struck Tricht, west of Arnhem, destroying sixty houses, and bringing down power lines and trees.
In the Flanders town of Oostmalle, a large number of homes were destroyed and the town's ancient Gothic church was almost totally destroyed.
In Tricht, police and rescue workers have been sifting through rubble and debris left in the wake of the spiralling wind. During the wind, cars were tossed in the air like pieces of paper.
Dazed villagers crawled from cellars and other places of refuge to find their homes in ruins and their belongings scattered.
The scene in Belgian villages was the same. Eye witnesses said the tornadoes had lasted only a matter of seconds. Communications were severely disrupted, and all telephone links between Oostmalle and the rest of Belgium were cut.
(A series of tornadoes and freak storms in various parts of Western Europe in the past three days have killed at least 20 people and injured more than 100 others. Yesterday (Sunday) seven people died and 700 people were left homeless when a tornado swept across an area of France north of Calais. At least two people have been killed in Holland by lightning, and today a boy was killed when a tree fell on him near Bruges during another tornado.)
