Background: Hot favourite Giacomo Agostini was robbed of almost certain victory in the Grand Prix of Nations 500 cc class at Imola in Italy on Sunday (19 May) when his Yamaha motor cycle ran out of fuel -- just two laps from the finish. A bitterly isappointed Agostini walked away from his machine, and stood by as Italian rival Cinanfranco Bonra, who had been 10 yards behind, sped on to take the race.

Agostini had repeatedly broken the course record. In the 31st top he clocked a new standard of 58.3 seconds, and averaged more than 96 miles an hour. Agostini still retains a 33-point lead in the 350c world championship, but Bonera's win in the 500cc event at Imola gave him the lead in that class.

The 500cc Grand Prix was marred by a crash, involving Barry Sheene from Great Britain. He was thrown from his machine when it hit a hay bank on a curve. Sheene, who was in third place, broke his ankle in the crash.

Two other riders were involved in crashed -- Celso Santos, from Brazil and the Italian Giovanni Cazzaniga. Santos wasn't badly hurt, but Cassaniga was taken to hospital, where he was treated for cuts and bruises.

Second place in the event went to Lansivuori, of Finland, and Phil Read, of Great Britain was third.
