Background: INTRODUCTION: More than 10,000 people marched through the streets of Athens on Wednesday (8 April) in protest at American military presence in Greece. The protestors' anger was directed against several targets - U.S. bases in Greece, the stationing of Cruise and Pershing missiles on their soil and Greece's membership of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO). The march coincided with a crucial phase of talks between Greece and the United States over the future of the country's four U.S. bases.

SYNOPSIS: The march to the Parliament building in Athens was described as the biggest protest the country had ever seen. Police were on hand to deal with any disturbances. The two major opposition parties want the U.S. bases in the country closed and Greece out of NATO. They claim nuclear warheads are already being stored on their soil. A delegation of marchers delivered a resolution to Parliament calling for an end to military negotiations with the United States.

The latest round of talks has been going on for the past six months. Greece did not sign an agreement negotiated in 1977 because it considered the two million dollars (316,000 pounds Sterling) offered in return for the bases to be inadequate. The Greek government says it will allow the bases to operate only if they serve NATO and Greek defence needs. They also want them to be under Greek command.
