Background: In their first-leg match of the European Cup quarter-final, Burnley, the British league champions, beat the champion German team Hamburg SV by 3-1 at Burnley, Jan. 18th.
After hard attacking by the Germans in the opening phase, a clever Burnley movement brought a goal high in the net by left-wing Pilkington in the 7th minute.
Burnley had a lucky escape to keep Hamburg from equalising, but then Burnley hammered away at the shaky German defence and nearly scored on several occasions. Just before half-time; another near miss for Hamburg when Sturmer miskicked at the goal mouth.
Pilkington scored spectacularly in the 55th minute to put Burnley two ahead, and the third goal came after a brilliant save by Burnley's goalkepper. Robson slipped the ball past goalie Schnoor. Five minutes later Hamburg's attacks at last met with success when Dorfel scored the only German goal.
The two teams meet for the second leg at Hamburg in March, when Burnley will have only their slender two-goal lead for the big away match.
