    Background: DHAKA, BANGLADESH

At least 40 people were on May 16 feared to have died in widespread flooding that affected most of Bangladesh and parts of north-east India in previous days. The heavy rainfall caused parts of the Bangladesh capital, Dhaka, to be submerged by the flood and accompanying landslides. In addition, thousands of people were marooned after rivers burst their banks, flooding homes, factories, and schools. Most severely hit was the south-eastern district of Comilla and Sylhet, where heavy rains and cyclonic storms killed 22 people and injured more than 100. In May last year, 75 people were killed and almost 50,000 made homeless by the seasonal flooding. At the time, the worst hit area of the country was also the south-east district.
