Background: THE NEWEST ADDITION TO THE AMERICAN DEFENCE MECHANISM, THE B-1 BOMBER, IS NEARING COMPLETION AT THE ROCKWELL INTERNATIONAL FINAL ASSEMBLY FACILITY IN PALMDALE, CALIFORNIA.

THE B-1, BEING DEVELOPED BY THE UNITED STATES AIR FORCE TO MODERNISE THE STRATEGIC BOMBER FLEET, HAS BEEN DESIGNED FOR SERVICE INTO THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY.

THE NEW BOMBER WILL SERVE U.S. NUCLEAR DETERRENCE OBJECTIVES THROUGH THE ABILITY TO DELIVER HEAVY PAYLOADS OVER LONG RANGES AND THROUGH HOSTILE ENVIRONMENT.

WHILE ONLY TWO-THIRDS THE SIZE OF THE B-52, THE B-1 IS DESIGNED TO CARRY NEARLY TWICE THE PAYLOAD.

IT WILL BE ABLE TO FLY AT TWICE THE SPEED OF SOUND AT HIGH ALTITUDES AND AT HIGH SUB-SONIC SPEEDS AT TREE-TOP ALTITUDES.

POWERED BY FOUR 30,000-POUND-THRUST TURBOFAN ENGINES, THE NEW BOMBER WILL HAVE FASTER TAKEOFFS FROM MUCH SHORTER RUNWAYS THAN THE B-52.

IT WILL ALSO HAVE GREATER HARDNESS AGAINST THE EFFECTS OF A NUCLEAR BLAST, FAR FASTER PENETRATION-SPEED, LOWER PENETRATION ALTITUDE AND A GREATLY REDUCED RADAR CROSS-SECTION THAN THE B-52.

IT CAN CARRY NUCLEAR AIR-TO-SURFACE MISSILES, NUCLEAR OR CONVENTIONAL GRAVITY BOMBS OR MINES.

SYNOPSIS: WORK ON THE B-1 BOMBER, AMERICA'S LATEST ADDITION TO ITS DEFENCE MECHANISM, WAS STARTED IN 1971 AT THE ROCKWELL INTERNATIONAL FINAL ASSEMBLY FACILITY IN PALMDALE, CALIFORNIA.

THE B-1 WILL MODERNISE THE UNITED STATES AIR FORCE STRATEGIC BOMBER FLEET AND IS DESIGNED TO SERVE AS A VIABLE DETERRENT INTO THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY.

WHILE ONLY TWO-THIRDS THE SIZE OF THE FAMOUS B-52 BOMBER, THE B-1 IS DESIGNED TO CARRY NEARLY TWICE THE PAYLOAD, OVER LONGER RANGES AND THROUGH HOSTILE ENVIRONMENTS. IT WILL BE ABLE TO FLY AT TWICE THE SPEED OF SOUND AT HIGH ALTITUDES.

THE B-1 WILL ALSO BE ABLE TO FLY AT HIGH SUB-SONIC SPEEDS AT TREE-TOPS ALTITUDE, AND CAN CARRY NUCLEAR AIR-TO-SURFACE MISSILES, NUCLEAR OR CONVENTIONAL GRAVITY BOMBS, AND MINES.

THE B-1 IS POWERED BY FOUR, THIRTY-THOUSAND-POUND TRUST TURBOFAN ENGINES, AND WILL BE ABLE TO MAKE FASTER TAKEOFFS FROM SHORTER RUNWAYS THAN ITS LARGER RELATIVE THE B-52. IT WILL CARRY A CREW OF FOUR.

THE NEW BOMBER WILL ALSO HAVE GREATER HARDNESS AGAINST THE EFFECTS OF NUCLEAR BLAST, FAR FASTER PENETRATION SPEED AT MUCH LOWER ALTITUDES, AND THE ABILITY TO EVADE RADAR DETECTION TO A MUCH MORE FAVOURABLE DEGREE.
