INFO: A memorial forest was dedicated at Kerem Maharal, near Haifa, today (dec 27) in honour of the ACTU leader and Labour Party president, Mr. Robert Hawke. The forest was donated by Australian Jewry for Mr. Hawke's "services to the Jewish people". An audience of about 120 people - most of them Australian Jews, many of whom are on a study tour of Israel, was present for the ceremony, in a quiet grove among the Carmel ranges. Israel's Defence Minister, Shimon Peres, was to have been the senior Israeli official at the ceremony, but he cried off at short notice because of the current political crisis. However, h sent a special message to be passed onto Mr. Hawke. Members of the Israeli Foreign Office, the Australian Embassy and the Jewish National Fund were on hand to pay tribute to Mr. Hawke and to the ties between the Australian and Jewish peoples.
