    Background: KABUL, AFGHANISTAN

Hundreds of demonstrators gathered outside the United States embassy in the Afghan capital, Kabul on December 30. They were protesting about what they claimed was the involvement of the U.S. in the current Afghan civil disturbances. The demonstration was led by Mahmoud Baryalai, brother of the Afghan president, Babrak Karmal. Protestors shouted slogans criticising President Reagan and the United States, including "death to American imperialism" and "damnation to Reagan the Satan". Recently Radio Kabul, which called the demonstration a "grand march" has been accusing President Reagan of prolonging the fighting and has claimed the United States was training Moslem guerrillas in neighbouring Pakistan. Meanwhile, anti-government rebels have disrupted electricity supplies to Kabul and some areas of the city have been without power for several days. Diplomats arriving in Pakistan from Kabul said that there was heavy firing in and around the city on December 28, the third anniversary of the Soviet's involvement in Afghanistan. A spokesman for the Hezbe Islami (Yunus Khalis) guerrilla organisation said they had planned attacks to mark the anniversary. Conflicting reports spoke of a guerrilla attack on the hydro-electric station at Mahipar in the Kabul Gorge -- the power station from where the capital gets most of its electricity. There were also unclear reports of a rocket attack on the Pule Charke generating station in the city and of rifle fire in the suburbs where the Soviet advisers live.
