INTRODUCTION: Although the Soviet Union won all but one of the titles in the annual 'Moscow News' ice-skating competition, the team from Canada mounted a strong challenge and provided some refreshing skating in the pairs event.

SYNOPSIS: Kay Tompson of Canada, the only non-Soviet competition to win a title, skated superbly to win the Women's event. Seen here, in her free-style programme, she pleased both judges and audience with her programme.

The knowledgeable spectators were charmed and she left the ice to vigorous applause.

Lorri Baier and Lloyd Eisler of Canada, skating in the pairs competition, had the most exciting programme in the competition. They did not match the sublime technical standard of the winners, Larisa Selezneva and Oleg Makarov of the USSR. But their programme involved some moves never seen before, and they finished the competition in third place.
