Background: Possibly the world's largest free party was staged in Rio de Janeiro from February 12 to 14. Thousands of Brazilians and overseas visitors turned out to see the parade of floats, dancers and bands as they paraded through Rio's streets. A highlight of the carnival was the Samba dancing, and leading this year's parade was the Portela Samba school dancers. Portela are the most famous of the Rio Samba schools having won the dancing competition more times than any other group. They were followed by dancers from the Imperio Serrano Samba school - winners of last year's competition. More than 3,000 dancers in exotic and expensive costumes took part in the Samba contest. Another aspect of the carnival was the fancy dress 'prize of men.' Dozens of men dressed in stylish costumes paraded before an international panel of judges who appeared to be highly delighted by the competitor's outfits. Amongst the judges were two famous soccer stars, Franz Beckenbauer, captain of the successful West German World Cup team in 1974 and Carlos Alberto, captain of the Brazilian world championship team in 1970. The costume winner was dressed in a creation called "Fascination of Spring" and second was a man dressed in what he called the "Horsemen of the Apocalypse".
