    Background: GUATEMALA CITY, GUATEMALA

In the central American state of Guatemala, 10 people were injured on Tuesday (29 December) when a powerful car bomb exploded outside a bank in the country's capital, Guatemala City. According to police it was the second time in three months the Industrial Bank of Guatemala had been the target of a bomb attack. The incident was the latest in a series of bombings in Guatemala City. Observers say it appears to be the start of a guerrilla campaign against the Guatemala government similar to that carried out 18 months ago by guerrillas in El Salvador. Cars are the favoured means for bombing attacks. As a result, parking has been banned anywhere near government buildings. An estimated 3,500 people were killed in 1981 in violence involving leftist guerrillas who are trying to overthrow the Guatemalan government.
