Background: South Africa has appointed a new chief of its defence force, Lieutenant-General Magnus Malan. An official ceremony was held in Pretoria on Friday (30 July).
SYNOPSIS: Before Lieutenant-General Malan was officially installed in his new position, the retiring chief of defence staff took part in a parade of honour. This was South Africa's first Admiral Hugo Hendrik Biermann who has been in the position for more than four years.
During the ceremony Admiral Biermann, aged 60, addressed the hundreds of troops, and guests present at the ceremony. Among those attending was South Africa's Defence Minister Pieter Botha. During the parade a fly-over also took place with the aircraft forming the letter B for Biermann in the blue sky above.
The new Chief of the Defence Force, Lieutenant-General Malan, has been the Army Chief of staff for the past three-and-a-half years. He is aged 46 and a year ago was awarded the Star of South Africa decoration for exceptionally meritorious service.
