Background: The struggle for the Algerian soccer championship grew tenser on Friday (13 May) after Belcourt fought back to defeat Sporting Union 2-1 at the Fifth of July stadium in Algiers. The result put Belcourt into the lead for the Championship.
SYNOPSIS: Sporting Union, playing from right to left, kicked off and launched an early attack. Looking for an early breakthrough, they put the pressure on Belcourt to take the lead before the second half.
Sporting Union turned the opening minutes into a one-way game, as they continued to harass Belcourt. With Sporting Union pushing forward, Ali Messaoud at number eleven fought off the Belcourt defence to score the first goal of the match in the 23rd minute of play.
It was at this point Belcourt began to fight back.
At the beginning of the second half the score was still one-nil in Sporting Union's favour. But in the 59th minute, Belcourt's number ten, Bedidi, tied the game with a penalty shot.
As the tension mounted, Belcourt continued its relentless attack, and in the 82nd minute Bedidi scored the winning goal -- the final score, two-one.
