TRANSCRIPT: "I THINK THE POLICE ACTED TERRIBLY. ABSOLUTELY ATROCIOUSLY. I SAW WANTON BEATING OF PEOPLE WHO HAD NOT THROWN ANY BOTTLES OR BRICKS OR ANYTHING ELSE - WHO WERE MERELY WALKING ALONG THE STREET; AND WERE BEATEN UNTIL THEIR HEADS WERE BLOODY AND THEY WERE LYING ON THE PAVEMENT. THERE WAS A WOMAN WHO ASKED A POLICEMAN TO HELP HER AND ASKED HIM TO ET HER A TAXI... SO THAT SHE COULD GO HOME. SHE WAS SHOT IN THE GROIN, AND IS NOW IN HARLEM HOSPITAL."

    QUESTION:"WHO WERE THE PEOPLE INVOLVED?"

ANSWER: "MOST OF THEM WERE PETTY CRIMINALS WHO TOOK THIS AS AN EXCUSE TO LOOT STORES... TO ATTACK POLICEMEN."

QUESTION: "YOU DON'T THINK ANY OF THEM WERE CIVIL RIGHTS DEMONSTRATORS AT ALL?"

ANSWER: "NOTHING TO INDICATE THAT AT ALL."

"WE HAVE HEARD PEOPLE TALK ABOUT MISSISSIPPI AND I WAS OUT IN CHICAGO LAST WEEK IN JAIL AND WE HEARD PEOPLE FROM MISSISSIPPI SAYING THAT THINGS ARE SO TERRIBLE IN MISSISSIPPI UNTIL THERE IS ONLY ONE THING THAT WOULD SOLVE THE PROBLEM IN MISSISSIPPI -- IS GUERILLA WARFARE...I'M BEGINNING TO WONDER WHAT IS GOING TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM IN NEW YORK."

ISIAH ROBINSON: "I WAS ANGRY BECAUSE TWO WOMEN WERE TAKEN AWAY; WERE BEATEN IN THE CARS BECAUSE THEY WERE AFRAID TO DO IT BEFORE THE CROWD. BECAUSE THE CROWD HAD BECOME WORKED UP AFTER SEEING ONE OF THE WOMEN BEATEN ON THE GROUND - BEATEN IN THE CAR."

BAYARD RUSTIN: "I HAVE BEEN IN THE POOL ROOMS AND BARS ALL DAY - I KNOW THE MOOD OF THE PEOPLE. THEREFORE WE WILL TRY TO URGE PEOPLE TO GET OFF THE STREETS AND GO HOME. TONIGHT THERE IS NO NEED IN HAVING FURTHER BRUTALISATION OF THE PEOPLE NEGRO PEOPLE AND THAT IS ALL THAT CAN OCCUR IF VIOLENCE IS USED IN ANY FORM."

IN NEW YORK TODAY (MONDAY) CITY OFFICIALS HAVE BEEN DISCUSSING WAYS TO PREVENT MORE DISTURBANCES IN AMERICA'S BIGGEST NEGRO COMMUNITY -- THE WORST RIOTS FOR TWO DECADES.

THE RIOTING, LONG FEARED BY POLICE AND SOCIAL WORKERS, EXPLODED ON SATURDAY NIGHT. STEEL-HELMETED POLICE FIRED THOUSANDS OF SHOTS OVER THE HEADS OF THE RIOTERS. THEY FOUGHT A SERIES OF RUNNING FIGHTS WITH SWINGING TRUNCHEONS, THEY WERE ATTACKED CONTINUALLY WITH BRICKS, BOTTLES AND PETROL BOMBS -- THE FAVOURED WEAPONS. ONE MAN WAS KILLED AND 119 INJURED IN THE WEEKEND'S RIOTING. ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHT PEOPLE WERE ARRESTED.

WHILE MOURNERS AT THE UNDERTAKER'S PREMISES SHOUTED AND CURSED THE POLICE, JAMES FARMER, A NEGRO CIVIL RIGHTS LEADER, HAD THIS TO SAY:
BUT A DEPUTY POLICE COMMISSIONER SAID MANY OF THE RIOTERS WEREN'T CIVIL RIGHTS DEMONSTRATORS AT ALL:

POLICE TONIGHT FIRED SHOTS TO BREAK NEGRO DEMONSTRATIONS IN HARLEM FOR THE THIRD SUCCESSIVE NIGHT. AT THE SAME TIME CITY OFFICIALS ANNOUNCED THAT MAYOR WAGNER, NOW ON A EUROPEAN TOUR, WOULD CUT SHORT HIS TRIP AND RETURN HOME TOMORROW.
