Background: India's longest-running industrial strike, involving a quarter of million textile workers in Bombay, entered its second year in January. There is still no sign of a settlement of the strike, which was called with the aim of winning wage rises and other concessions from the owners of Bombay's 60 mills. The industry produced more than 65 per cent of India's textile exports. Dr. Datta Samant, who organized the action, said it would continue until the workers go justice -- and denied the strike was losing support. The owners maintained that of Bombay's 47 privately owned mills, 22 were operating most shifts with an attendance of 66 per cent. The remaining 13 mills are state-owned.
