Background: Nicklaus, playing steadily but unspectacularly, reeled off eight consecutive pars before he got the bird on nine, missing from eight feet on the par five fifth hole.
He scored another two-putt birdie on the 12th, another par five, made his only putt of the day from about 18 feet on the 17th and closed with another two-put bird on the 538-yard 18th.
For the second day in a row he needed 35 putts on the tiny greens. In his last three rounds Nicklaus used 104 putts, just four under the norm. And he played those 54 holes a total of 11 under par, a tribute to the controlled power that let him drive the green on two par four holes and reach a flock of par five in two.
The 31-year-old Colbert, recent winner of the Milwaukee Open, had a fantastic round. He bogged the relatively easy par five fifth hole, then sced the 130-yard sixth, holing out a nine iron shot. He made eagle three on the ninth and finished the day with a total of two bogeys, two eagles, five birdies and nine pars.
Second place was worth $28,500 to the seven-year pro from ???erland Park, Kan., and marked his biggest payday. Nevil, who had won a total of only 421, 000 in two seasons on the tour, won 17,750.
