Background: There was a celebrity-studded crowd to watch this year's Gstaad Montgomery Cup ski-jumping event, Feb 8. Queen Juliana of the Netherlands was present, and ex-soldier who donated the cup, Field Marshal Lord Montgomery.
Nilo Zandanel of Italy, a 22-year-old frontier guard, member of the Gialle Ski-Club Bregazzo and a potential Olympian, won the Montgomery Cup with two jumps of 214 1/2 feet. His nearest rival Otto Leodolter of Austria jumped 201 1/2 and 211 1/4 feet. Third was Andreas Dascher, Switzerland; he jumped 195 and 201 1/2 feet.
