Background: The world's latest nuclear accelerator for splitting the atom is nearing completion in Israel, amid a major international controversy over its nuclear capability.
SYNOPSIS: The accelerator is at the Canada Centre for Nuclear Physics at Rehevot, in central Israel - where it's being st up at cost of six million U.S. dollars in conjunction with Israel's Weizmann Institute, for the benefit of Israeli scientists involved in nuclear research. Equipment was supplied by a Untied States firm, and the buildings and facilities designed by an Israeli architect. A primary motive for the new accelerator is that previous nuclear research facilities in Israel are becoming out-dated, and ideas coming form Israeli laboratories have to be sent outside the country for development.
The accelerator is basically a very powerful research instrument which enables scientists to make detailed observations into the nucleus of the atom, the shapes of atomic nuclei, their internal organisation and their interactions with each other. The atom smasher is officially called the 14 U-D Pelletron - and its unique advantage is that it produces beams of considerable higher quality than its predecessors.
Which means it can focus the beam on the minutest of spots with a higher degree of accuracy. With a terminal voltage of 14 million volts it will not only provide Israel with a home-based centre for the development of their own nuclear power, but it is also expected to create research facilities for scientists from further afield, for it is one of only two of such advanced design and construction in operation, the other one being in Australia.
