    Background: ??? INDIA

Thousands of people filed past the memorial set up outside the former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's home in Allahabad on November 9. The urn containing Mrs Gandhi's ashes was placed on the memorial by her son Rajiv Gandhi, who has succeeded his mother in office. Mrs. Gandhi was assassinated by two Sikh members of her personal bodyguard on October 31. The murder was followed by widespread violence in which more than one thousand people, mostly Sikhs, died. Although tension in the country has eased, a re-shuffle of the security forces has followed the violence. The Delhi Police Commissioner, Subash Tandan, has been replaced and at least five other senior intelligence officials and policemen have been suspended or transferred, and Delhi's top civil official has ben replaced. Mrs Gandhi's ashes were carried around the country to give Indians the chance to pay their last respects, and then Rajiv Gandhi took the casket aboard a helicopter before boarding and Indian air force plane in New Delhi. The ashes were scattered over the Himalayan mountains from the aircraft. The ceremonies ended the twelve days of official mourning which followed the assassination.
