    Background: MORE, THAN 150 STUDENTS FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS MARCHED THROUGH THE NIGERIAN CAPITAL YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) TO CELEBRATE THE END OF THE NIGERIAN CIVIL WAR. THEY CARRIED PLACARDS ATTACKING THE POPE AND SECESSIONIST BIAFRA.

    THE DEMONSTRATION WAS STAGED TO SHOW SUPPORT FOR A UNITED NIGERIA AND TO CELEBRATE THE END OF THE 30 MONTH CIVIL WAR. SAME OF THE PLACARDS THE STUDENTS CARRIED READ..... "SHAME ON THE POPE", "HOTTEST PART OF HELL FOR THE POPE", AND "BIAFRA IS DEAD AFTER 30 MONTHS."
    THE DEMONSTRATORS MARCHED THROUGH LAGOS AND THEN ASSEMBLED TO HEAR SPEECH. THEY THEN DECIDED TO PROCEED TO DODAN BARRACKS TO SEE GENERAL GOWON. IT WAS AT THIS STAGE THE DEMONSTRATION GOT OUT OF HAND. SOME OF THE STUDENTS TRIED TO CLIMB ONTO THE TOP OF BUSES FOR THE TRIP TO THE BARRACKS AND POLICE HAD TO SUE TEAR GAS. WHEN EVENTUALLY A SMALL GROUP OF THE DEMONSTRATORS REACHED THE GENERAL'S RESIDENCE THEY WERE TOLD THEY WOULDN'T BE ALLOWED TO SEE THE NIGERIAN LEADER. HOWEVER THEY WERE LATER RECEIVED BY LIEUTENANT COLONEL ANYARU ON BEHALF OF GENERAL GOWON.

    IN A STATEMENT RELEASED AFTER THE DEMONSTRATION THE STUDENTS PLEDGED THEIR CONTINUED SUPPORT AND OFFER TO HELP IN RECONSTRUCTION WORK.
