Background: United States President Richard Nixon arrived in Salzburg on Saturday (May 20) for consultations with Chancellor Bruno Kreisky, some sightseeing and a short rest before leaving for a week of summit talks in Moscow on Monday (May 22).

Left-wing anti-Vietnam war demonstrations marked the President;s arrival and continued throughout most of his visit -- with Dr Peter kreisky, the Chancellor's son, marching through the streets of Salzburg with the protestors.

Tight security precautions prevented any serious incidents, although demonstrators clashed with police on several occasions. There were also several bomb scares.

On Sunday (May 21), President Nixon conferred with the Chancellor on Vietnam and other international issues. In a press briefing afterwards, White House adviser Henry Kissinger hinted that the first agreement to scale down the nuclear arms race might not be reached during the President's eight-day visit to the Soviet Union.

Meanwhile, in Moscow, the Kremlin emphasised that its approach is the Angle-American talks will be businesslike and realistic - as last minute efforts to give the Soviet capital a "new look" continued, with women workers still laying paving stones along the route the President will follow between Moscow airport and the centre of the city.

Some of the demonstrators were arrested...and others injured.....as police drove them to the edge of the airport just before President Nixon arrived for a brief visit to the Austrian tourist resort for consultations with Chancellor Bruno Kreisky -- and for a rest before going on the Moscow, for a week of summit talks starting on Monday.

There were more demonstrations in the centre of Salzburg. Strict security measures prevented any serious incidents. But demonstrators and police clashed several times and there were several bomb scares. Police and security men were on a twenty-four hour alert. One demonstrator carrying an anti-Nixon placard was Doctor Peter Kreisky, the Austrian Chancellor's son.....

Later, President Nixon held talks with the Chancellor about Vietnam and other international issues. But no mention was made about lifting the current bombing raids.

After the talks, Mr Nixon and White House adviser Henry Kissinger chatted to bystanders. And Doctor Kissinger hinted that the first ever agreement to scale down the nuclear arms race might not be completed during the Presidential visit to the Soviet Union.
