Background: INTRODUCTION: Athletics -- and a new world record of 53.5 seconds for the women's 440 yard (metre) run has been set by Rosalyn Bryant of the United States at the Millrose Games in New York. Miss Bryant, a member of the U.S. Montreal Olympic team last year, cut three-tenths of a second off the previous record set by Lorna Fords of Barbados only two weeks earlier. In other events at the Games, in Madison Square Gardens, Miss Fordeset a house record in the 880 yard (metres) run and Steve Riddick took the men's 60 yard (metres) dash. Freida Davy won the women's 60 yard and 33-year old Willie Davenport took first place in the men's 60 yard high hurdles. In the men's mile, the world's 1500 metres (about a mile) record holder, Filbert Bayi of Tanzania, did not run well. He blamed his performance on fatigue after a flight from Europe. The event was instead won by Ireland's Eammon Coghlan in four minutes 0.2 seconds after a hard struggle against Kenya's Wilson Waigwa. A report from the track, starting with the men's 60 yard (metres) high hurdles.
