Background: The Hong Kong border checkpoint at Lowu was the release-point today (Monday) of Mr. John Downey, an agent of the CIA imprisoned for 20 years in China. He was captured during the Koreen war when his plane was shot down over Peking. He was convicted of espionage and spent most of his imprisonment in Peking.
President Nixon pleaded for his release last week. after Mr. Downey's mother suffered a stroke. The last two remaining American prisoners, both pilots shut down during the Vietnam war, are due to be released on Thursday. Mr. Downey made the quickest exit ever recorded from Hong Kong. A helicopter carried him from the border to KAITAK airport where an American medical evacuation jet from the Philippines had been waiting all night. He transferred immediately from the helicopter to the jet and in a total of 2 minutes from the moment of his release was airborne for Clark Field, the American POW clearance centre set up for returning Vietnam prisoners. At Clark Field, another U.S. jet waited to fly Mr. Downey direct to the United States.
