    Q. "Why are you opening this factory in Australia?"

    A. "Because my company, Brinton's Limited, have a long record of exporting to Australia and I think we are one of the largest exporters from the UK, and we cover a period of over 50 years. And in view of import restrictions and things like that, I think it is a wise move to get our market in Australia which has been a large one".

    Q. "And why did you pick Geelong?

    A. "Well, Geelong is the centre of the textile industry and I think that people who are used to that form of industry will be much more easily trained than otherwise."

    Q. "How many local people will you use?"

    A. "All together I hope to employ about 350 people in our first plans. That includes of course the trained people from Kidderminster".

    Q. "And how many are going from Kidderminster?"

    A. "Eighty-four men and women - including two dogs".

    Q. "Did you have any difficulty in getting theses people?"

    A. "None what-so-ever. We had about 70 applications from male workers and of course we were able to pick and choose. I'm afraid some of them are very disappointed at not going".

    Q. "Are they going just to train the Australian people or are they going for the rest of their lives?"

    A. "Oh no. I hope for the rest of their lives." They will train Australian people but I hope they will like it so much that they remain there."

    Q. "And have you asked for single men and women to go out?"

    A. "A few single men, but we prefer married men, of course, whose wives are skilled in carpet processes and will - and many of them will agree to work for us there".

(Interviewer) - "Well, an engaged couple going out, I think they are going to spend their honeymoon on the boat".

    Q. "Why are you going to Australia?"

    A. "(boy) "It will be better prospects out there. For me as it is, it is no good down here now".

    Q. "You don't like the prospects here in Kidderminster. Now, your fiance. I suppose you know there is a housing shortage in Australia. Are you worried by that?".

    A. (Sound fogged.)

    Q. "What happens if you don't like Australia?"

    A. "(girl) "Well, we can come back in five years. They guarantee us to come back in five years."

    Q. "They are going to pay your passage back?"

    A. "Yes".

(Interviewer) - "Well that's pretty good". Now an older person. I should imagine you are a key worker here. Why are you going to Australian?"

    A. "Well, we were invited, experienced personalities were invited for positions out in Australia, and as the prospects of the life appeal to myself and my family, we decided this was it".

Background: An English carpet factory - Brinton's Limited, of Kidderminster, Worcs., - which has long exported its goods to Australia, is now setting up its own factory out there. Their new factory will be at Geelong, Victoria.

Looms and other machinery are already on the way to Australia, and they will soon be followed by workpeople and technicians from Kidderminster who are going out to Geelong to staff the factory, and train Australian workers.

On March 16, as more looms were being dismantled ready for shipment to Geelong, Brinton's Director and General Manager, who is responsible for the scheme, was interviewed at Kidderminster:
