Background: The First Asian Track and Field Championships was officially opened on Sunday (13 November) on the outskirts of Manila.
A crowd of over 12,000 spectators filled the Rodriguez Sports Centre to watch the opening ceremony. Security was reported to be heavy throughout the day's activities at the stadium.
340 athletes from 18 countries are taking part in this, the biggest gathering of Asian athletes outside of the Asian Games. Among the nations represented is Taiwan, which was recently expelled from participating in next year's Asian Games in Teheran.
The week-long competition will include a total of 39 track and field events. All of them will take place in the Rodriguez Sports complex.
