Background: An explosion in an empty hotel early today (Tuesday) was one of the few incidents to mar the otherwise trouble-free day of mass parades by Protestants celebrating Monday's Orange Day.

The explosion started a blaze which badly damaged the Hotel Elsinore in the Antrim Road--a district frequently hit by the religious rioting last month. Police said the probable cause was an incendiary bomb and that it was definitely an arson attempt.

Firemen called to the scene were assisted by British troops who'd been stationed in the area during the Orange Day parades.

The previous day had seen over 100,000 members of the Protestant Orange Order on the march in 19 different parts of Northern Ireland. For weeks past it had been predicted that the marches would provoke major civil conflict with the Catholic minority. But the forecast trouble never developed and Government leaders and army chiefs praised both factions for their restraint and common sense.
