Background: Israeli Defence Minister Moshe Dayan and his military chief of staff, Lieutenant-General David Elazar were at Lod International Airport on Monday night (23 July) when news broke that the hijacked Japanese airliner had left Dubai and was heading west.

The state of alert reached a new peak after the news that the hijacked jet might land at Lod. Israeli skies were under close watch in case the big jet was on a suicide mission, but the four-day alert was called off after news that the jet had been blown up at Benghazi.
