Background: DR. VERWOERD EMERGED OCTOBER 19TH AS THE LEADER OF THE STRONGEST NATIONALIST PARTY GOVERNMENT SOUTH AFRICA HAS EVER KNOWN, WINNING TWO MORE SEATS FROM THE OPPOSITION. IN MOST RETURNS THE NATIONALIST PARTY MAJORITY WAS DOUBLED.

MR. VERWOERD WAS ON HAND AT THE PRETORIA RISSIK CONSTITUENCY OCTOBER 18TH TO CAST HIS VOTE FOR THE NATIONALIST PARTY CANDIDATE, VAN NIEKERK. IN THE HOUGHTON DIVISION, PROGRESSIVE CANDIDATE MRS. HELEN SUZMAN, WAS FILMED TALKING WITH HER SUPPORTER.

THE BIG ISSUE IN THIS ELECTION HAS BEEN WHETHER THE COUNTRY WILL GIVE THE NATIONALIST PARTY A MANDATE TO CARRY ON AND EVEN EXTEND ITS POLICIES OF APARTHEID.

LONG BEFORE POLLING CLOSED IT WAS EVIDENT THAT SOUTH AFRICA VOTERS WERE BORED BY THE GOVERNMENT'S FREQUENT APPEALS TO THE ELECTORATE. THE ELECTIONS ON OCT 18TH WAS THE FOURTH IN FOUR YEARS.
