Background: South African Prime Minister P.W. Botha received overwhelming support on September 14 from the National Party's Transvaal conference to his power sharing formula. Mr. Botha outlined plans for whites, coloureds (people of mixed race) and Asians to share political power. The Congresses of Natal and the Orange Free State have already accepted the proposals and Cape Province is expected to ratify them, when it meets next month (October). The Prime Minister told the Transvaal conference that the cultural rights and freedom of religion for minorities within the republic will be protected. He also pledged orderly government, and Mr. Botha said peace will be pursued with neighbouring countries -- as far as possible.
