Background: AN IMPORTANT MALAYSIAN BASE IN SARAWAK IS LOCATED AT NANGA GAAT, ON THE BALEH RIVER, ABOUT 40 MILES (64 KMS) FROM THE INDONESIAN BORNEO BORDER.THE BASE IS MANNED BY A MALAY REGIMENT.

NANGA GAAT IS THE HOME OF DATO TEMENGGONG JUGAH, PARAMOUNT CHIEF OF THE IBANS AND FEDERAL MINISTER FOR SARAWAK AFFAIRS IN THE MALAYSIAN CABINET.

THE BASE WAS SET UP AFTER INDONESIAN FORCES PENETRATED SOME 35 MILES (57 KMS) INTO SARAWAK IN SEPTEMBER, 1963 AND OVERWHELMED GURKHA TROOPS AND BORDER SCOUTS.

FROM NANGA GAAT, BRITISH NAVAL HELICOPTERS WORK IN CLOSE CO-OPERATION WITH MALAYSIAN AND BRITISH TROOPS IN PATROLLING THE BORDER WITH INDONESIA.THE HELICOPTERS TRANSPORT THE TROOPS INTO AREAS NEAR THE BORDER, KEEP THEM SUPPLIED AND BRING THEM BACK TO BASE FROM TINY JUNGLE CLEARINGS AT THE END OF THEIR PATROLS.

THESE UNITS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ABOUT 20,000 SQUARE MILES (51,000 SQ KMS) OF MOUNTAINOUS JUNGLE COUNTRY, RISING TO A HEIGHT OF SIX TO SEVEN THOUSAND FEET IN SOME PLACES.IT IS AN AREA SPARSELY INHABITED BY IBAN, KENYAH AND KAYAN PEOPLE AND OFFERS MANY ROUTES OF ACCESS TO THE BORDER.
